Youth Rugby
Submitted by Webmaster on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 20:52.
Youth rugby in the Sacramento area is growing at an exponential rate. In 2007, the 7th/8th grade division was formed, and there are currently teams in Land Park, South Sacramento (Islanders), Dixon and Loomis (Golden Eagles). It is anticipated that new teams will be forming in the near future in Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove.
For the 2009 season, there will be a full contact 5th /6th grade league as well. It is expected that Land Park and the Islanders will again have a team. Joining them will likely be at least two additional teams: one from the Mission School area; and the other from Sierra Oaks.
The Youth leagues run parallel with high school rugby. Practices and registration typically begin in December/January with league play concluding in early April. A website is being developed with more information, but in the interim the best person to contact is Matt Eason (Matthew [at] capcitylaw [dot] com). Matt would be happy to put you in touch with the program that is in existence or forming closest to you.
Coaches Wanted:
The biggest impediment to starting a youth program has been a lack of coaches. Youth rugby is a lot like youth baseball or youth soccer. You do not need to have been a successful player, or a have any real coaching experience to teach the young players basics and to have fun. If you are interested or willing to assist or lead a program, please contact Matt Eason as he would be glad to put you in contact with others in your area to share the “burden,” share with you some of the basics, and help you jump start a program.
